Nta Nzu Itagira Inkigi: No Home Without Foundation
This is a project I did in collaboration with Craig Cohen while we were Duke University HART leadership fellows in Rwanda. Craig and I worked with UNICEF to help policy makers understand the unique situation of children orphaned by genocide and living without any adult support or supervision. My images and Craig's writing helped UNICEF establish child-headed households as a specific subgroup of vulnerable children with distinct programming and funding needs. The work was exhibited in Kigali in 1996 when Rwanda was emerging from genocide and had a direct influence on policy there.
Images and interviews were published as a booklet distributed by the International Rescue Committee's Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children. The work also was also featured in magazines with essays by Phillip Gourevitch and Naomi Wolf respectively. Excerpts from the project were included in the exhibition, "Children of War, Children of Hope" which hung at United Nations in New York and the Capital Building in Washington DC as well as ArtShare in Los Angles.
